On November 7, the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame’s historic event will enshrine a group of air and space legends from throughout the United States who significantly contributed to the aerospace and aviation legacy of our state, including the Thunderbird Alumni Association of our nation’s Ambassadors in Blue, the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron (Thunderbirds). This recognition will carry over into Veterans’ Day and the public air show that follows. Media from around the world has expressed an interest in interviewing the one living individual enshrined, Frank Murray, veteran members of the NVAHOF staff, and those supporting this event that is a first for enshrining an association such as the Thunderbirds Alumni Association. Media requests will be coordinated through NVAHOF Director of Communications, Connie May. NVAHOF plans to make recognition of aviation and aerospace associations and organizations unique to activities only in the state Nevada an annual event.
The EAA store from Washington will be supporting NVAHOF and the 2012 class of enshrinees at their concession stand at Nellis AFB during the air show. EAA merchandise will include the NVAHOF commemorative coin and an assortment of NVAHOF memorabilia plus a line of Area 51 items to commemorative those who first selected and ran the Groom Lake facility commonly referred to as Area 51. The reception will commence at 1800 hours at the Plaza Las Vegas located at 1 Main St. Las Vegas. Dinner will be served at 1900 hours followed by the awards ceremony. Dress will be business attire. Mike Schmitz, NVAHOF’s official photographer will take photos that will be available to attendees on request. Roger Andersen . NVAHOF’s Director of Ceremonies and Protocol will emcee the ceremony.
This year’s class of enshrines honors a wide assortment of aerospace and aviation legends from nationwide venues that include NASA and DOE’s Dr. Bussard who designed the nuclear rocket engine tested at Jackass Flats, World War I and II aviators such as air mail pioneer Maurice Graham and Jess Harris, air mail pioneer, test pilot, and the flying sheriff who inspired aviation in law enforcement, Randal Henderson, the first to fly into Las Vegas, CIA’s A-12 pilot Frank Murray who, while assigned to Groom Lake, flew surveillance missions over North Vietnam and North Korea, and the Air Force’s veteran of the YF-117A stealth plane era, David Ferguson. Three of those being enshrined were also former Lockheed test pilots that includes Bill Park. Three of those being enshrined also flew at Groom Lake.
Several members of social organizations such as Roadrunners Internationale have registered to attend the event and expressed intent to attend the air show at Nellis as well. Many of them have registered under NVAHOF’s group code to acquire the special rate for a special room at the Plaza. We encourage such organizations acquire tables at the banquet for their members and provide NVAHOF with the organization banners to display at the event to show their support.
The Plaza Hotel has provided NVAHOF with a discounted block of rooms for those attending. Those staying at the Plaza may register under this block using the reference group code SPNV. Room rates are $30 plus tax for Wednesday and Thursday (Nov 7 & 8), and $63 plus taxes for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which are holiday rates for Veterans Day. Attendees will meet new friends in which to exchange war stories, exchange challenge coins, and show their respect and support for aviation in Nevada and to the families and friends attending to represent one of the enshrinees.
NVAHOF will also host a hospitality room where our friends and guest can enjoy each other’s company. We ask everyone to register as soon as possible to enable NVAHOF to better organize the event. Make your presence known by visiting the hospitality for a lasting dose of aviation stories from the aviators and supporters themselves.
Various agencies will be supporting the event with their presence. Those corporate supporters who have not done so needs to reserve their table at the banquet and provide NVAHOF with their corporate displays showing their support for NVAHOF and those being enshrined. Corporate sponsors are encouraged to display banners, posters, etc. at the banquet and ceremony event to show their support to NVAHOF, the Thunderbirds Association, and others being enshrined. You Cold War veterans will appreciate the significance of the menu including “Adversary” Chicken Kiev Supreme (the four word description being meaningful in Military Circles) The banquet menu offers some excellent choices: The main is Kieve course w/Mixed Wild Rice, Caesars Salad, Steamed Broccoli & Cauliflower, Fresh Rolls & Butter, Chocolate Cake–White Frosting w/Blue “Nevada Aerospace HOF”, Raspberry Filling (red-white-blue). Also, Iced Tea, Assorted Teas, Brewed Regular & Decaffeinated Coffee. Wine will be donated (TBD)
