Marie E. McMillan
In 1978, Marie Elizabeth Stever Daly McMillan learned of the US National Aeronautic Association issuing special citations for any flying records set during the 75th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ flight. Deciding not to break an existing record but to set a new one, on December 16, 1978, she flew alone from Fresno, California and landing in Las Vegas early on the morning of December 17. she had set her first record. During the next decade, she set 656 more records, the first person to establish flight records in the Caribbean Islands, and the first woman, and the second person, after Charles Lindbergh, to establish flight records in Mexico. Today, she holds 328 US national and 328 international records, for a total of 656, more than anyone in the world.
For being a modern-day aviation pioneer, setting world records and crossing traditional boundaries related to women’s roles in science, technology, and aviation, Marie Elizabeth Stever Daly McMillan earned her place in the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame.
