Robert A. Hoover

For three decades, Robert A. “Bob” Hoover managed air race operations and assisted pilots with safely landing planes experiencing problems. In 1962, he began using North American Aviation’s most notable aircraft, a P-51, to promote the company at air shows around the United States. In 1964, Hoover provided aerobatic demonstrations and served as an official starter for the Unlimited-class races at the first Reno Air Races. When the Unlimited racers became lined up in their proper position beside Hoover’s P-51, he would radio “Gentlemen, you have a race.” At that time, he would ascend as the contestants dropped toward the first turn and then circle overhead throughout the race to assist any pilots with problems.

Robert A. “Bob” Hoover’s three decades of maintaining safe operations in the Reno Air Races has earned him a place in the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame.
