Stanhope S. Boggs

Stanhope S. Boggs, a graduate of the School of Military Aeronautics at the University of California at Berkeley, flew forest patrol during World War I. After the war, he flew for the US Air Mail Service, flying over the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 13,000 feet above sea level in his open cockpit aircraft.

He was the first person to fly the mail over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, flying from San Francisco to Elko and back, with stops in Reno.  On December 28, 1920, Boggs reached an altitude of 18,000 feet above sea level on a flight from San Francisco to Reno, and on February 7, 1921, set a record of one hour and nineteen minutes flying from San Francisco to Reno.

Boggs flew his last flight for the US Airmail Service on March 19, 1921, when he flew round-trip from San Francisco to Reno.  Experiencing altitude sickness, he became a superintendent with the Airmail Service, and by 1930, Boggs earned reclassification as an airways engineer.

He became the assistant manager of the Sixth Air Navigation District,” a branch of the Civil Aeronautics Authority (later to become the Federal Aviation Administration) and continued to work for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement from federal service.

For his role in the successful implementation of transcontinental airmail service to Reno, Stanhope Boggs earned his place in the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame.
